Dealing with a divorce is one of the hardest things you may ever deal with, but if you have landed yourself here, chances are you are searching for some answers. In today’s day and age, custody battles are all too common, but if you and your soon-to-be-ex-spouse can agree upon the terms of custody of your children, you may save yourself a lot of hassle. Split custody and joint custody are very common, but here’s what you need to know about these options.
Split Custody
This type of custody involves one (or more) child residing with one parent, while the other child (or children) resides with the other parent. For instance, big brother may go with dad, and little brother may go with mom. Split custody may not be ideal for some, but it takes into account work schedules, after school activities, and such. In some instances, split custody is easier and makes sense.
Joint Custody
Joint custody involves two parts, the physical custody (where the child resides), and the say so of how the child is to be raised concerning medical care, employment, extracurricular activities, education and such. One parent may simply not be able to physically care for their child, in which case the child will permanently reside with the other parent, while the law still allows for visitations. In these cases, the law also allows for both parents to have a joint say in the upbringing of the child (or children).
